A fork is one piece attacking two or more enemy pieces at once. The opponent can only save one, so you win the other. Knights are the classic forking piece because nothing can block their attack, but pawns, queens and even kings fork too.

How to spot it
Look for enemy pieces a knight's move apart, or two undefended pieces on the same line or diagonal. A check that also hits a second piece is the most forcing kind.
